Through the looking glass

Through the Looking Glass was published in The Varsity’s bi-annual magazine. The theme of the spring magazine, “Spine,” focused on self, identity, and power. The magazine won the prestigious John H. McDonald Award for Best Online Media and the Emerge Media Award for Best Design: Media Website, both in 2021. The piece itself was awarded second place for the Emerge Award for Multimedia Production.

Through the Looking Glass interviewed seven individuals who grappled with body dysmorphia and their identities, sharing their journey to self acceptance, many of whom still struggled during the time of the interview. Vulnerable before the camera, these photos are reflections of their internal strife, reflected in the representation of objects and allusions to common imagery, and their confrontation of it in the studio.

The project, from beginning to end, took nearly two months, working closely with interviewees to accurately represent their intimate stories with themselves.
